CONSTITUTION is my final project in the class Machinic Modernity.
Based on two focuses of modernity and technology in this class and the whole previous interpretation of the reading materials, I chose to put my final project in a more critical context and wanted to explore the evolution of the relationship between humans and Artificial Intelligence.
As my final output, I designed all the research and visualization I made into a booklet to show my critical thoughts about this relationship in various aspects.
︎This project has been selected to present in the Student Art exhibition at the SFO Museum from March 1 to July 11 in 2023.
CCA MFA design, Machinic Modernity by Erik Adigard & Ignacio Valero
CONSTITUTION, an exhibition by Celia Ziyan Cai at the SFO Museum, March 1 2023 – July 11 2023
California College of the Arts’ (CCA) design program includes the course Machinic Modernity, which is taught by Erik Adigard and Ignacio Valero. The class intersects contemporary design practices with a global understanding of “progress” as it is framed by western interpretations of modernity and technology. MFA design student Celia Ziyan Cai’s project for Machinic Modernity, Constitution, reflects identity in today’s digital-oriented society. With herself as the subject, the artist uses a rich mix of images, graphics, and typography to explore how the relationships between organic beings and artificial beings are constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed in digital environments. The designs are presented as a dramaturgy structured in four parts: Identity, Community, Environment, and Catharsis.
