The Absence Between Us
2022.10 - 2023.04

exhibition
installation

The Absence Between Us is my thesis project in the one-year long class Studio Forward, which sponsored by Google.
Contentious political borders and the global pandemic have increased isolation and separated loved ones all over the world.
Our project — The Absence Between Us shares personal human stories collected during forced isolation. This work is an audio-visual installation featuring four interviews about experiences of forced isolation, showcasing the unique experiences, emotions, and personal narratives people experienced during their time apart. Universal themes emerge from the stories we share.
It highlights the power of storytelling to foster human connection and empathy.

Detailed Introduction:
The Absence Between Us, shares personal human stories collected during forced isolation. The piece features intimate face-to-face conversations between individuals, showcasing the unique experiences, emotions, and personal narratives shared during their forced time apart. Various universal themes emerge from the stories we share. We will invite the audience to reflect on their own experiences during times of isolation.
The Absence Between Us is an audio-video installation which resonates with the power of storytelling fostering human connection and empathy, telling about people’s experiences of forced isolation, including studying abroad, family members passing away, and being away from loved ones. We’ve all experienced these sad moments, especially during the global pandemic. We hope that our piece could give some space for the audience to reflect on their own experiences during times of isolation. The main idea of our project is about an illustration on some forced isolations people are facing in the past, in the current period, and also in the future. Our project featured 4 interviews we conducted with people who have experienced their sad, lonely, stressful, and even tragic moments due to forced divides which are caused by various factors. Hence, we combined these interviews together to make them in a 20 minute looped video, and presented it with the projection on this kind of fabric we chose which resonated with our topic - SEPARATION. Like people could barely see each other when they are standing on each side of the fabric, it is the intention of our group to make people feel isolated when they are watching the video.
